DANISH MEP RINA RONJA KARI: ETA-INITIATIVE TO PUT ARMS BEYOND USE IS AN IMPORTANT FIRST STEP FORWARD IN BASQUE PEACE PROCESS

On the 21st of February 2014 in Bilbao, the International Verification Commission (IVC) announced that Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA) had put some of its armed materials beyond use.

ETA declared an end to its armed campaign on 10th of January 2011. The IVC was established the same year to verify the “permanent, general and verifiable ceasefire” and the “definitive end of violence” as declared by ETA. Since its establishment, the Commission has verified that ETA has fulfilled its commitment to cease all assassinations, bombings, attacks, threats and extortion.

Danish MEP, Rina Ronja Kari, welcomes the new initiative by ETA:

– I commend ETA for their initiative. This is a first and important step forward in complete disarmament and a significant advance in the Basque peace process. I also want to commend the Basque people for their strong support for a peaceful resolution of the conflict. This is good news for everyone who wishes peace.

– The Spanish Government should build on this opportunity. I therefore urge the Spanish government to change its policy of opposition to the peace process.

– The Spanish Government has a key role to play in achieving a just and lasting peace in the Basque country. Confidence building measures – which were an important part of the Irish peace process – can assist in this. I therefore call on Spain to transfer all Basque prisoners to prisons near their families as stated by Spanish law and international recommendations – and to release prisoners who are suffering from serious illnesses.
